Defining Endosome-Lysosomal Network Dysfunction in Neurological Disease

Start Date: September 2026
Duration: 4 years
Funding: Royal Society Studentship (UK students only)
Application Deadline: Sunday, February 15, 2026 at 11:59pm GMT

About the Project

Dysfunction in the endosomal-lysosomal network is a key cellular pathology found across human developmental and age-related neurological diseases including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Our laboratory focuses on developing and applying cutting-edge techniques to achieve a thorough mechanistic dissection of this network, translating acquired knowledge to understand neurological disease.

This fully funded 4-year PhD studentship will study endosomal-lysosomal network function in the context of human development and age-related neurological disease.

Training and Techniques: You will receive comprehensive training in core cell biology research techniques including biochemistry (especially quantitative proteomics), molecular approaches (including AlphaFold and structural methods), and cell biology using gene-edited human i3-neurons, fixed and live cell imaging.
The project will be supervised by Prof. Peter Cullen, with collaborative input from other PIs in Bristol and a network of worldwide collaborators.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and innovative student with a degree in:
  • Biochemistry
  • Neuroscience
  • Molecular Cell Biology
  • Medical Science

Lab Culture: The successful candidate will share the core values of the Cullen lab in collaborative, multidisciplinary and open team science, conducted in a transparent, supportive and relaxed environment.

Location: Bristol is a centre for molecular cell biology research, and you will benefit from exposure to a wide range of cutting-edge research. The city of Bristol is vibrant, cosmopolitan and culturally diverse, with excellent flight connections to European cities.
